Experience Clear Vision with LASIK

LASIK, or Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, is the leading refractive eye surgery today, with millions of successful procedures worldwide. This laser eye surgery, also known as laser vision correction, effectively corrects myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism by reshaping the cornea.

How does LASIK Work?

Performed by skilled ophthalmologists, LASIK offers a permanent alternative to glasses or contact lenses. It's a rapid and nearly painless procedure, and most patients experience minimal discomfort afterward, with rapid vision recovery often reaching 20/20 within 24 hours.

LASIK is a versatile solution that can address nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. For those aged 40 and over, it can even reduce the need for reading glasses using mono-vision.

Wavefront LASIK, also known as wavefront-assisted, wavefront-guided, or custom LASIK, stands at the forefront of laser vision correction. Unlike standard eyeglasses prescriptions, wavefront-guided procedures utilize computerized analysis to map laser treatment (ablation) with unparalleled precision.

This advanced approach goes beyond traditional LASIK by addressing subtle optical imperfections known as "higher-order aberrations," which standard ablations cannot effectively treat. Research demonstrates that wavefront-guided ablations deliver sharper vision and enhance night vision, reducing the risk of halos or glare.

Who Is A Candidate for LASIK?

The ideal LASIK candidate, typically aged 21 and above, has healthy eyes with adequate corneal thickness, as this procedure reshapes the cornea by removing tissue. It's essential to note that chronic dry eye, corneal disease, or certain abnormalities may deem someone ineligible for LASIK. Our comprehensive eye exams and consultations help you determine your suitability.

It's crucial to approach LASIK as an elective procedure, weighing personal needs and potential benefits and accepting associated risks. While LASIK doesn't guarantee perfect vision, it often reduces dependence on glasses and contact lenses, offering enhanced vision under normal conditions.

However, it's essential to consider that your vision may not be as clear as it was with glasses before LASIK.

At Eason Eye Care, we guide you through this decision-making process, ensuring you make an informed choice about LASIK surgery.

The LASIK Procedure: What To Expect

LASIK is a convenient, two-step procedure you can walk in and out of within an hour. Although the surgery itself lasts around 15 minutes for both eyes, it's advisable to plan for a bit more time at the surgery center.

The surgeon skillfully creates a thin, hinged flap on your cornea using a precise laser instrument. They gently fold the flap back, allowing the laser to reshape your eye effectively. After a brief laser treatment that typically lasts a minute or less, the surgeon delicately repositions the flap and then enhances your other eye.

Your LASIK Recovery Guide

After your LASIK procedure, recovery is a crucial phase for a successful outcome. Here's what you can anticipate:

Following LASIK, you will receive medicated eye drops and protective shields for your eyes. You can open your eyes and move around without glasses, but please arrange for someone to drive you home, as driving is temporarily restricted. Medicated eye drops will be necessary for a week or more to prevent infection and support healing.

Artificial tears can maintain comfort and moisture in your eyes. Resting your eyes on the day of surgery is recommended. Dim lighting in your home may be more comfortable during this time.

The day after LASIK, your vision should be improved enough to resume your daily activities, including driving. Avoid rubbing your eyes until your eye doctor deems it safe. If you use Latisse, discuss when it’s safe to resume this regimen with your eye doctor post-surgery.

You may need to request a follow-up visit with your eye doctor for the day after surgery. Your eye doctor will assess your vision and healing progress and will provide any necessary instructions about eye drops and artificial tears.

In some cases, a different eye doctor may perform postoperative care in a co-management arrangement with your LASIK surgeon, and we’re pleased to offer this service at our office.

While most patients experience clear vision within days, it can take a few months for your vision to fully stabilize. If you still have blurry vision after several months, consult your LASIK surgeon for potential enhancement or eyewear options.

Even after LASIK, it’s essential to protect your eyes. Wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection outdoors. Reading glasses may become necessary if you’re over 40, and mild prescriptions can enhance night driving safety.

Lastly, request regular eye exams, as eye health remains important even with perfect vision post-LASIK. These exams help monitor your overall eye health and ensure stable vision. At Eason Eye Care, we provide comprehensive post-LASIK care and support to maintain eye health and vision quality.
